The story of Poppy

In Sweden, generations have grown up with the tradition of lördagsgodis – Saturday candy. Once a week, Swedes of all ages head to their nearest store to fill their very own pick-and-mix bag with their favourite sweets. A beloved tradition that celebrates the beginning of the weekend, and proves that happiness, in fact, can be bought by the scoop. 

It goes without saying that Swedes are among the world’s biggest consumers of pick-and-mix candy, making them true candy experts – and proudly so. Over the years, creating the perfect candy mix has become something of an art form. Sweet, sour, chewy, fizzy… everyone has their own favourites.

So, even though both Hampus and Sofia had fallen head over heels for their new home in Budapest, they couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

With an entrepreneurial spirit and a longing for a taste of home, Hampus and Sofia decided to take matters into their own hands. A few morning walks later, they found the space that would become Poppy. Signed, sealed, and soon filled with colour, joy, and candy, Poppy was born.

Today, Poppy is run by Hampus, Sofia, and their shop manager, Marcsi. A Budapest local who has embraced Swedish candy culture as wholeheartedly as they have, Marcsi helps bring the tradition of lördagsgodis to life every day – proving that the love of Swedish candy knows no borders.
